Digital Literacy

Our school actively integrates digital literacy to enhance learning across various subjects, helping students develop essential 21st-century skills.

STEM: Technology is used to support science, technology, engineering, and math education through interactive simulations, coding activities, and problem-solving tasks.

Literacy & Typing: Students improve their reading and writing skills using digital tools, typing programs, and online story creation platforms

Research & Projects: Pupils learn how to safely and effectively research information online, evaluate sources, and present their findings using digital tools such as powerpoint and google slides

Coding: Students engage in coding lessons using age-appropriate programs e.g Bee Bots and Scratch; fostering computational thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

By integrating digital literacy into these areas, our school ensures students are prepared for the future while making learning more engaging and interactive.

An Cultúr (Culture)

Gaeilge

Tá áit lárnach ag an Ghaeilge agus an chultúr Gaelach i saol na scoile agus bíonn seans ag na daltaí páirt a ghlacadh in imeachtaí éagsúla i rith na bliana.

The Irish language and culture plays a central role in Scoil Cholmcille, Máigh Rua and pupils have the opportunity throughout the year to take part in various related events.

Seachtain na Gaeilge
Titeann seachtain na Gaeilge thart fa Lá le Pádraig gach bliain agus bíonnn ‘Lá Glas’ againn sa scoil chun í seo a chéiliúradh. Bíonn Ceol agus Craic go leor againn uilig.
Seachtain na Gaeilge takes place nationally each year around St. Patrick's Day to celebrate Irish language and culture. Here in the school we recognise the event by organising ‘Lá Glas’ with plenty of music and Dance.

Comórtas Beal Binn agus Ceim Aniar
Bíonn Comórtas Beal Binn (Gaoth Dobhair) agus Ceim Aniar (na Dunaibh) ar siúl gach bliain. Is comórtas íad a thugann seans do pháistí a gcuid abáltacht sa Ghaeilge a chuir in iúl i bhfoirm dán. Glacann cuid mhór de dhaltaí na scoile páirt agus bíonn buaiteoirí ón scoil go minic.Tá muid iontach bródúil as na páistí uilig.

Beal Binn and Ceim Aniar are locally organised Irish language competitions, which take place in Gaoth Dobhair and Downings respectfully each year. The competitions provide the children with the opportunity to recite a poem through the medium of Irish. Many of the pupils take part each year and perform so well. Maith na páisti uilig.

Ceol
Music is an important part of the curriculum here in Scoil Cholmcille, Murroe. All our pupils begin learning the tin whistle and various instruments (including fiddle, guitar, keyboard and accordion) are taught to pupils from infants to Rang a 6. We are very fortunate to have Múinteoir Eva coming into our school to teach us every week. We enjoy performing at our annual Christmas concert, end of year Summer celebration, visiting the Lakehouse Dunfanaghy during Seachtain na Gaeilge and also at the Senior Citizens Party.

Dráma

Tá traidisiún fada láidir drámaíochta sa scoil agus baineann na daltaí tairbhe agus taitneamh as.
Drama plays a huge part in the lives of our children in Scoil Cholmcille. Our School has a great and proud tradition of concerts and shows and this would not be possible without our multi-talented children. Every Christmas each child performs in a Christmas Concert and we are very lucky to have the use of the Ozanam Community Centre in Dunfanaghy for our aspiring performers. We see the value of our children performing on stage – the fun, excitement and confidence-building is wonderful and every year they look forward to performing to a captive audience!

This year the senior room children have participated in the Coirm Gael Linn and Féile Scoil Drámaíochta 2025 with the drama ‘Ní mar a shíltear a bitear’ and are now in the Féile Uladh.

Student Council

Our Student Council plays a vital role in representing students' voices and organising events. They help foster leadership, teamwork, and responsibility among students while ensuring that everyone has a say in important school matters.

One of their key activities is overseeing the Christmas Toy Show Treat Boxes. This involves planning, organising, and distributing special treat boxes for students to enjoy during the annual Toy Show event. The council works together to decide on the contents, coordinate with teachers and staff, and ensure that every student gets a festive surprise. This initiative helps spread holiday cheer and enhances the sense of community within the school.

Creative Clusters - Collaboration through shared Education

Murroe N.S is once more taking part in Creative Clusters with our partner schools (Ballymore N.S and Loughanure N.S). Creativity, Culture and Education (CCE) is an award-winning international foundation dedicated to unlocking the creative learning potential of children and young people around the world.

Peaceplus/Aspire/Léargas

We look forward to joining with Scoil Eoin Pol, Loch an Iúir and Ballymore National school for a new cycle of the Peaceplus Aspire Project - our new project will facilitate the investigation, exploration, and presentation of the heritage and history of our local communities by looking at places of historical significance and experiencing crafts and trades that our ancestors relied upon.

Every Child A Reader

We are thrilled to have been successful in our application and have been selected to receive a book-gifting award from Children’s Books Ireland, funded by the Toy Show Appeal. This incredible opportunity means that, starting in January, our school library will be enriched with wonderful new books. We are also delighted to announce that we will be meeting our Champion of Reading, Isla Mc Guckin who will inspire and engage our students as part of this initiative. We can’t wait to embark on this journey, fostering a love of reading and creativity in our school community. A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible!
